今回は “finally”、”lastly”、”eventually”、”in the end”、”at last”の意味の違いついて解説します。

各単語の意味

finally

・困難や遅れを伴う長い時間のあとで
・一連の出来事や物事の最後に
・[文副詞]　最後の項目や理由を述べる際に使われる
・疑いや対立が終わるような方法で

lastly

最後に（一連の項目や動作の最後を述べるのに使わる）

eventually

[文副詞]　最後に、特に長い遅れや、対立、一連の問題を乗り越えた後に

in the end

最終的に、もしくは、よく考えてみると

at last (at long last)

最終的に、大きな遅れの後に

意味やニュアンスの違い

“finally”、“eventually”、“in the end” は、長い時間が経った後、特に困難や遅れがあった場合に使われます。そのため、「やっと」「ついに」「最後には」というニュアンスになります。また “in the end” は口語ですので、しゃべり言葉で使われます。

・After a lot of questioning, James finally admitted he had taken the car.
・The plane eventually arrived at 6:30 – over three hours late.

・長い尋問の後に、ジェームスはついに車を盗んだことを認めた。
・飛行機は3時間以上遅れてやっと、6時30分に到着した。
・最終的には、ビリーに助けを求めるのが一番いいことだと決めた。

“at last” も同じように「やっと」「ついに」という意味がありますが、長いこと待ち望んでいた良いことが起きたときに使います。“at long last” も同じです。

“lastly” は単純で、一連の物事の「最後に」という意味になります。大学論文などでも使われます。 一連の物後の「最初に」に当たる “first of all” や “firstly” の対義になります。

finallyの意味

finallyの意味は英英辞典では下記の通りです。
